I found this insightful, easy to follow video on “How to teach your dog not to bark at noises” on YouTube. Besides demonstrating how stop your dog from barking at noises, this video helps you understand the reasons for using this method.

Here’s a preview of the video’s tips:
1) Identify what causes your dog to bark
2) Reinforce dog’s quiet behavior BEFORE the dog thinks to bark
3) Interrupt your dog when they are barking (call them to you or changing directions if you are walking them) so it is not reinforced.
4) Prevent barking when you are not around (leaving the TV on, don’t allow access to the dog’s trigger)

Considering buying or building your dog his own house? Regardless of whether you are buying a ready made dog house or if you’re building one from scratch, the house must be the right size and be appropriate for the weather conditions for Fido to feel safe and comfortable.

Below is a snippet of free custom dog house available for download on ronhazelton.com & directions for how to make a simple two room, insulated, weather resistant dog house. I encourage you to go to the website to download the free plans and view the step by step videos on how to make a custom dog house. For the creative types, use this design as a spring board for your one of a kind piece of art. Make this dog house your own by painting, adding siding, corrugated metal, license plates, bamboo, tile, cultured stone, plants, etc, to the outside. For flooring, you could add straw for comfort, tile in hot climates, laminate, and so on.

1 Size the Parts

To size the parts for your doghouse, make the width equal to your dog’s length plus 12”. The length equals the dog’s length plus 18”. And the height equals the dogs height plus 9” in the front and sloping back to the dog’s height plus 3” in the back.

2 Build the Base

After you’ve determined the size of the doghouse, cut the base parts to length from pressure-treated 2×4’s. Then butt the ends together and secure the joints with weather-resistant screws. Cut a floor panel to fit from 3/4”-plywood and secure it to the base with weather-resistant screws.

3 Angle the Sides

To keep your pooch dry, the roof sits on angled sides. To cut identical angles, first attach the side pieces together temporarily with double-sided tape. Then clamp a straightedge to the sides at the desired angle and make the cut with a circular of saber saw. Secure each side to the base with weather-resistant screws.

4 Add the Corner Braces

To create a sturdy, weather-tight structure for your pet, corner braces are installed to keep the house from racking and also prevent drafts. Each brace consists of two strips of plywood screwed together. These are then attached to the sides and then to the back and front panels with weather-resistant screws.

5 Install the Partition Wall

The partition wall is an important part of your pet’s new home. Not only does it keep out weather and provide privacy, it also creates a space small enough for the pup’s body heat to keep them warm. Secure the partition to the base and install a plywood panel angled to match the sides.

6 Insulate the Walls

To help keep your pet warm in the winter and cool in the summer, install rigid foam insulation in the wall cavities. Use either 1-1/2”-thick foam or glue up layers of 1” and 1/2” foam. Cut these to fit and then cover them with 1/4”-plywood. (If you don’t, your pup may discover the foam is fun to nibble on.)

7 Cut the Door Opening

Before you attach the front, have your pup stand in front of it and make a mark a couple of inches above his back. Make the width the pup’s width plus 3”. Center the opening and cut it out with a saber saw. Secure the front to the corner braces and then sand the opening smooth.

8 Add the Roof

The roof is cut slightly oversize to aid in rain runoff. It’s secured at the back edge with a weather-resistant piano hinge to make cleaning a snap. Cover the roof with tar paper and install a metal drip edge around the perimeter.

9 Install the Shingles

We used asphalt shingles to make the roof waterproof. Just make sure to use nails that are short enough so they won’t poke through the roof and endanger your pet. Start at the bottom overlapping each row and work your way to the top. Apply a bead of roofing cement to the top edge to seal out moisture.

It’s only natural for dogs to bark, whine and howl. This vocalization is how they communicate with humans. The vocalization of barking can be both a positive and a negative.

We usually like dogs to bark a couple of times to alert us that someone is at our door. Or to scare off an intruder. Many times bad habits can develop and barking becomes excessive. How do you “fix” this annoying habit? In my opinion, the average dog owner has three options.

1) Barking as a Trick – Turn your dog’s barking into an on command trick. Use positive reinforcement; edible treats seem to yield a quicker end result. Say a command such as “SPEAK” when you dog barks and give him a treat. Then you can teach him “QUIET” or “ENOUGH”.

2) Water Bottle – Squirt you dog with a stream of water from the water bottle when you want him to stop barking and say the word “NO”. Reward your dog when he stops with praise or a treat.

3) Anti Bark Devices – There are many anti bark devices on the market to not only hush your dog, but a near by dog as well. Many of these devices are anti bark collars that work through sonic technology or a citronella spray. There are many many options when selecting an anti bark collar such as the ability to set the number of barks your will let your dog have before the collar starts correcting the behavior. Barking only a problem when outside? Or maybe your neighbor has a yappy pooch. There is even a cute bark control bird house you can hang in your yard that sonically stops all dogs with in range from barking.

Just as your old dog picks up new bad habits, it’s never to late to train your dog to stop barking. Keep in mind that a cool, calm attitude will get you a lot further in training your dog than angry, frustrated energy.
